36 Hours in Kyoto (food+omiyage edition)

Many visit Kyoto with a lengthy list of temples and shrines, but that’s not all Kyoto has to offer. From kaiseki meals to trendy cafes, Kyoto blends tradition with modernity. I’ve always wanted to write a 36 hours itinerary so as the Japanese say when asked for a recommendation, here are my オススメ (o-su-su-me). Friday 8 a.m. Breakfast at 進々堂 Shinshindo Nothing is more comforting than the smell of melty butter and coffee brewing in the morning. Whipping up some of the freshest breads in town, Shinshindo Teramachi makes for a great breakfast stop. The original Shinshindo was founded in 1930 and is an iconic Kyoto institution located across from Kyoto University campus. Like many great cafes around the world, Shinshindo was a place for students and activists to congregate for political and social debates throughout the decades. Tokyo Food Winter Guide: Spanish Tapas and French-Style Yakitori

Where did the time go, it’s Spring already! Here is Part 2 of my Tokyo Food Winter Guide, which covers everything from the insanely popular BAKE cheese tarts to delicious french-style yakitori. This post contains a bunch of the places I tried that are more fusion than my previous post, A Tokyo Winter Guide: Sushi Zanmai, Ginza Maru, and More. I visited Jiyugaoka for the first time this trip and I’m excited to share my finds! Jiyugaoka (part of Meguro ward) is a lovely neighborhood of Tokyo that’s fairly residential, mixed with a bunch of fusion restaurants and quaint storefronts. If you’re in the Jiyugaoka area this spring, be sure to visit when the cherry blossoms are in bloom because most streets are lined with these stunning trees! 1. Visit Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market; open only on weekends, it has over 15,000 stalls! Ranked consistently as one of the world’s greatest markets, Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market is more affectioned called the ‘JJ Market’ by locals. From street foods to colorful silk shirts, Chatuchak Market is a dream come true for those that want to get a taste of Thailand’s street foods, products, and culture. Part of Bangkok’s weekend culture is a shopping in Chatuchak with an estimated 200,000 other visitors everyday! Imagine pushing your way through all these stalls in Thailand’s hot humid summers. It’s definitely a fun experience not to be missed! Mizuha and I rushed to Chatuchak Market right after we landed in Thailand–it was our only shot at the weekend market after all! In no particular order, we tried: Mango Sticky Rice, Spicy Fried Squid, Fried Fish Cakes, Coconut Ice Cream with sticky rice and corn (my absolute favorite!) and Green Mangos with chili sugar.
