Chocolate Decadence at Tokyo’s Bubó Cafe

The ‘World’s Best Chocolate Cake’ can now be found in the backstreets of Tokyo’s Omotesando area. Bubó is a Barcelona-based patisserie known for its beautifully designed cakes and artisanal chocolates. On my recent trip to Japan, I visited Bubó’s Tokyo outpost to try Xabina, the chocolate creation that received the ‘World’s Best Chocolate Cake’ mention at the 2005 World Pastry Cup in Lyon. Worth the trek? Absolutely. The Xabina cake is velvety, rich, and a chocolate masterpiece. I enjoyed the chocolate macaron on top and the chocolate mousse inside is a cloud. I’ll reserve judgment on whether it’s the world’s best chocolate cake because there are simply too many chocolate creations I haven’t tried yet. But to date, it is certainly the best and most gorgeous chocolate cake I’ve had. When you visit Bubó in Tokyo, try not to be too distracted by the amazing chocolate gallery on the first floor and head straight up to the Cafe. New York to Tokyo: Dominique Ansel Kitchen

Hello New York City! A new city, a new food adventure. Having finally moved here a couple weeks ago, New York City is a blur of weekdays and weekends in which the ultimate question is not what to eat, but instead, which one of the million eateries to step into. For a while, I couldn’t decide where to start blogging. Moment of truth: the two questions I asked myself everyday were 1) what’s for lunch? 2) what should be my first blog post? But finally, I decided there is nothing more exciting (or indulgent) than a visit to New York City’s coveted patisserie, Dominique Ansel Kitchen. An airy cafe setting as opposed to its bakery counterpart, Dominique Ansel Kitchen is more than just a cronut-fad. From seasonal desserts like Fraises Des Bois to classic DKA’s, Dominique Ansel has created a dessert shop that is as trendy as it is delicious. Afternoon Tea in West Village: Bosie Tea Parlor & Patisserie Claude

Hello Spring! In the words of Taylor Swift, “nice to meet you, where you been?” Now that it’s finally warming up, spring days with beautiful sun hats, nice walks in the park, and afternoon tea dates don’t feel that far away. So, to celebrate the upcoming spring blooms, here are two cozy afternoon tea places in New York City’s West Village. After all, where better to await spring than tea parlors and patisseries? Bosie Tea Parlor Bosie Tea Parlor has been a New York staple of mine for a while–it’s low-key, has an artsy vibe, and serves great finger sandwiches. The traditional afternoon tea set isn’t over the top, and comes with a wide range of fresh macarons you can choose from. The table’s favorite was the salted caramel macaron, but the lavender macaron was also really lovely. Plus, Bosie’s Earl Grey Mille Crepe is just delicious! If you like subtly sweet desserts, you’ll definitely enjoy the fluffy layers of earl grey creme. Fall Weekend Holiday in New York

Gourmand (one who takes great pleasure in food) is a word I’ve been called by some of my close friends and it’s most definitely the best word to describe my recent long weekend. After all, Fall Weekend holiday was the perfect excuse for a girls getaway in New York City! Luckily, with a lovely airbnb booked in East Village, my best girlfriends and I were ready to start on a long list of delicious places to visit. Unsurprisingly, right at the top of our list was The Fat Radish, Ippudo Ramen, and Chelsea Market. The Fat Radish was the newest addition to our list of must-try brunch spots–curtesy of my friend Ellie who constantly scouts out amazing finds for me! As for Ippudo–I just couldn’t wait for a bowl of their spicy Tonkotsu ramen. It sounded like the perfect throwback to Tokyo’s noodle shops I miss so dearly (oh but of course, Ippudo’s Hirata pork belly buns are to die for too!). Indulging in Matcha Eclairs at Sadaharu Aoki 青木定治

Sadaharu Aoki is a highly acclaimed patissier I’ve been dying to try since I arrived in Tokyo. If you adore classic teatime pastries the way I do, you’ll definitely find Sadaharu Aoki’s exquisite Matcha Eclairs irresistible. By infusing traditional Japanese ingredients into French pastries, a visit to Sadaharu Aoki is a sweet-tooth culinary adventure for sure! Excited to try out Sadaharu Aoki’s lovely array of pastries, Mizuha and I embarked on yet another afternoon full of sweets this past week. As usual, we couldn’t decide on just one tea set to get, so what better than a degustation cake sampler? Located in Roppongi Midtown’s B1 Level, Sadaharu Aoki offers a colorful cake sampler if you dine in–a definite worthy splurge. But of course, since summer is the perfect time for kakigori, and I also had my eyes set on the rows of lovely eclairs–we decided to try a little bit of everything!

A love affair between Croissant and Taiyaki at 銀のあん

Croissant Taiyaki Croissant meets Taiyaki, and a love affair later, I think I’m in love too! 銀のあん, following Dominique Ansel’s wildly popular inventions (cronuts, milk and cookie shots, etc.), adds its own twist to a traditional Japanese dessert. Taiyaki たい焼き is a Japanese fish-shaped pastry, stuffed with sweet Azuki Red Bean paste. Traditional Taiyaki dough has a pancake-like consistency. After grilling it, it’s nice and fluffy, with a golden finish. However, Croissant Taiyaki has more of a croissant-like consistency, meaning layers of flakey goodness and a crispy almond-brown color! The original flavor Croissant Taiyaki is with the sweet Azuki Bean paste, but they happened to have a summer special when I went today–a Green Tea Croissant Taiyaki! Filled with green tea custard, the Green Tea Croissant Taiyaki is extra lovely with its candied red beans on the outside and green-tea flavored layers. Good friends, good tea, and some lovely scones: that is the ideal life

This past weekend, Talia, one of my best friends & partner in crime I regularly kidnap for brunch, turned 21! To be able to celebrate with Talia and all our friends we’ve met in London was really a fabulous time. Afternoon teas have been a highlight of our time in London and Bake-a-Boo is probably Talia and I’s favorite. Not only do they provide Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free options, the shop itself is everything girls love: pastel colors, gorgeous tea sets, and endless choices of fairy cupcakes.

Sweet tooth haven in Covent Garden!

Happy Thursdays! Since being in London, I’ve looked forward to Thursday luncheons with two of my favorite girl friends I’ve met through LSE classes, Michela and Haruka. It’s easy to become instant best friends with girls who 1) share my love for sweets 2) Asian food 3) and on top of that, can speak Chinese and Japanese with me! As we normally have Dim Sum or Japanese food, we decided to change it up and go have Thai food this week. Busaba Eatthai is one of our favorite Thai restaurant chains in London and as always it didn’t disappoint. But the highlight today was afterwards, when we went on a coffee and dessert hunt in Covent Garden. Even though I’ve been in London for nearly a year, Covent Garden–crowded with thousands of tourists and street entertainers–still remains exciting every time I go. Be sure to check out Covent Garden’s outdoor market! Catch it on a sunny day, (or even cloudy like today) and you’ll find lots of stalls packed with people buying fresh sandwiches, cupcakes, paella, etc. …

Peter Gordon’s Kopapa: ‘building to store food’

  If you want some amazing smoothies and fresh seasonal items, Peter Gordon’s Kopapa is the perfect breakfast spot. Located right in the up and coming Seven Dials area, Kopapa is best enjoyed on a sunny day–so be sure to snag an outdoors seat if you can! Bright and early, I could not think of a better person to grab breakfast with than my good friend Talia, who is my partner in crime on the weekends when we go on morning runs and then splurge sessions on market foods. Eating with Talia, who is gluten and dairy free, has also opened my eyes to a whole new world of eating–one I will definitely be blogging about later (but essentially, frequent trips to Whole Foods and our favorite vegetarian restaurant, Food for Thought, are inescapable weekly routines!) My brunch love affairs at The Wolseley

I’ve had multiple love affairs at brunch before, but none as gorgeous as The Wolseley’s (yet!). Brunch at the opulent cafe-restaurant right in Piccadilly takes me back to gorgeous Viennese cafes like Cafe Central. The idea that I could have affogato and a croissant for breakfast is just fantastic. Having visited the Wolseley a couple times, I’ve tried their assortment of viennoiseries and it is absolutely phenomenal. Chocolate lovers cannot miss the pain au chocolat or the double chocolate brioche. Every bite makes me feel hugely guilty, but if you love chocolate, it’s heavenly. Paired with the wide selection of coffee, The Wolseley easily offers a light breakfast. Now if you’re looking for a more comprehensive brunch affair, be prepared to make some tough decisions. The Wolseley’s egg benedict is as perfect as it is classic. I’ve been multiple times and they really know how to poach their eggs to perfection. If you’re looking for a more hearty selection, I’d recommend their pancakes. While the pancakes come with blueberries, opt for the less healthy side of crispy bacon …
